We’re always striving to be better versions of ourselves. Whether it’s as a significant other, friend, family member, or business partner, we want to be the best we can be.
As you jump into a new business venture, it can be hard to tell whether you have what it takes to succeed as a business leader.
While we can’t promise anything, we can share four qualities that we think greatly attribute to success in business. Let’s dive in…
1. Successful leaders have a vision of the type of leader that they want to be. Think about your past jobs and the bosses that you have had. What made them great? What made them not so great? A strong leader will know what he or she stands for as a boss and what will (and won’t) be tolerated in his or her place of business. He or she will also radiate positivity, while balancing the environment out with sternness when need be. Leaders have a vision for their company, team, and employees, and a strategic plan to get there. Moral of the story: think about the type of leader that you would like to have if you were in your employees’ position, and then go out and be that person.
2. Good leaders give their teams things to do during their shifts, but a great leader will empower their employees to find their voice as individuals and give them the tools they need to build up their skillsets. Oftentimes, business leaders just want tasks to be completed, and quite honestly, they don’t care how it gets done or who does it. It’s important to remember that, as the boss, you are in a unique position where you can help shape and mold the individuals that are working on your team. Not only do we support leaders mentoring their staff, but we encourage leaders to utilize team building, foster a positive work environment, and promote teamwork within the company.
3. Communication is key in all aspects of business, but it is especially important for the boss to learn how to communicate effectively. Miscommunication is the reason for so many workplace stressors and it can easily be avoided. As a leader, it’s up to you to ensure that your employees and clients feel comfortable with how you are communicating to them, delivering the message, and ensuring that they are clear about what you are saying. Whether it’s through email, text, or simply conversations, take the time to really understand how your employees like being communicated to. Trust us when we say that it will make a world of difference!
4. A great leader never stops learning and striving to be the best. Complacent leaders never grow, and without growth, success is often limited. If you want to find success in business, we encourage you to continue to brush up on all of your leadership skills. This includes all the aforementioned skills, as well as new ones like time management, handling stress, and how to delegate properly. No matter how long you have been in the industry, we highly encourage you to continue to learn and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Putting your ego aside and simply leaning into the experience of learning new things as a boss will pay off in the long run and set you apart from the other leaders in your space.
Although these are just a few of the characteristics that we believe make a great leader, we encourage you to continue to use this as a ‘checklist’ on your journey towards success.
Are you doing everything in your power to be the best version of yourself possible? When you ‘clock out’ for the day, do you feel satisfied with how you treated people, the way you led your team and the energy you brought to your business that day? If not, we highly encourage you to revisit these points and brush up on your skills.
