7 Ways to Destress: A Guide for Business Owners

Ah—the end of a long work day as the owner of your own business. You may have enough time to cook dinner, visit with your family, or maybe you simply can only muster enough energy to shower and get yourself in bed at a decent hour. You do your best not to think about the tasks you have to do tomorrow or if you remembered to do everything on your to-do list today. You just want to relax and unwind.

Truth is, at the end of a long work day, most business owners end up preparing themselves for the next day, where they will do it all over again. It can be exhausting, and over time, it can wear people down and cause them to become increasingly stressed. If business owners do not take the time to unwind and relax at the end of the workday or work week, they may find themselves accidentally lashing out at their employees—something that no one wants to see happen.

With that being said, here are seven ways business owners and managers can destress and unwind.

1. Make sure that your habits outside of the workplace have the best intentions.

This means making sure you are getting enough sleep, drinking enough water and eating nutritious meals. The things business owners do outside of the office can actually have a huge impact on how they act in the workplace. Taking the extra time needed to cook a nutritious meal or get a full night’s sleep can actually come in handy during a stressful work day!

2. Know when to simply say no to things that are inevitably going to stress you out.

This particular one may take some practice, but if you can learn to recognize stress triggers, you can learn to say no to the things that bring you stress.

3. Create a system that works for your business.

If you get overwhelmed due to paperwork that somehow always gets backed up, create a system ahead of time that will save you the headache in the long run. It’s important to recognize what stresses you out and give yourself an opportunity to find a way around it, or a system that prevents it. What this looks like is ultimately up to you, so make sure it works for YOU!

4. Know when to take a short break from work, even if it is a 15-minute walk.

Stepping away from a stressful situation, even just for a few moments, can give you an opportunity to take a deep breath and calm your thoughts and emotions. Some people enjoy walks, while others like to just sit in silence. Choose the type of break that works for you and enjoy it.

5. Remember to have things you enjoy outside of work, such as hobbies or just spending time with people that you love.

Taking a few hours to enjoy something outside of the workplace can give you the break you need to come back with a fresh perspective and a renewed sense of energy. Think of your social life as half of the equation—without that equation being solved, you essentially are left half-complete!

6. Delegate, delegate, delegate.

Being a manager or business owner comes with so much responsibility, but it is important to remember that you are only human. Lean on the incredible team that you have put into place and trust them to help you when you need it. Remember, if you don’t trust them to help you out, you may want to rethink the employees you have surrounding you.

7. Separate your home life from your work life.

One of the easiest ways to destress is to remember to leave work at work and to simply check out until you are on the clock again. Remember this: your work life and your personal life are equally important to your vitality and happiness, and each aspect of your life deserves undivided attention. It may be easier said than done, but try to compartmentalize work issues to a part of your brain that is only unlocked during work hours and leave it there. You will start to feel relaxed in no time.

Is your go-to destress activity on the list above? Could you be doing more to unwind at the end of a long day?
