Are you having trouble winding down at the end of the night? Are you waking up in the morning more tired than you felt right before you went to sleep?
You may have tried melatonin, meditation, hot baths and minimal screen time before bed, yet it still isn’t working! What gives? Well, allow us to let you in on a little secret. The reason you aren’t sleeping well at night could actually be because you are unhappy with your current employment situation.
Here are just a few reasons (according to the Better Sleep Council) why your current job could be affecting your sleep patterns, and why a new job may be able to break the unhealthy cycle.
1. Individuals who feel an immense amount of pressure at their current jobs are 1.5 times more likely to have sleep problems than those who do not feel unwanted or unnecessary pressure at their place of work. This could be due to the pressure that one feels outside of working hours and the inability to turn the mind off or compartmentalize thoughts after clocking out for the work day.
2. Not feeling respected or valued at work are also two reasons why you may not be able to turn off your brain at night, leaving you more susceptible to restless or light sleep each night. Workers who are poor sleepers are nearly 3 times as likely to feel as though they are not respected in their place of work. These feelings can do some serious damage to our egos and wear us down over time. This can impact your overall mood for the rest of the evening and set you up for a night of worrying, overthinking, or subconscious anxiousness that can keep you from falling deep into the REM cycle.
3. The sooner you go to sleep, the sooner the work day will come. Therefore, if your workplace environment is less than ideal, you may just be subconsciously putting off sleeping. This could come in forms of watching too much tv, finding any excuse to do anything but go to sleep or simply staying up late to overthink about your current situation.
So, what does this mean and how can you change it?
Good question, we’re glad you asked!
Essentially, what this means is that your work life and happiness at your job has a direct reflection on your sleeping patterns, whether you know it or not. You may think you are just feeling anxious because it’s a Sunday evening, but is it just the anxiousness of starting a new work week, or is it something deeper than that? What’s more: this is a vicious cycle that may never end. According to the Sleep Foundation, “When you’re drowsy, your brain is not as creative and won’t process information as quickly or retain important facts as well.” If you don’t function well at work, you in turn may be up at night with anxiety or overthinking.
Do you see the pattern?
Thankfully, this pattern doesn’t have to be permanent. You can put an end to it. Here’s how: find a new job that you truly love and will allow you to sleep at night! It may sound like a no-brainer, but most people fail to realize that they don’t actually have to keep putting up with this cycle of unhealthy behavior. You can change it for yourself!
The first thing that you should do is reflect inwards to figure out what type of job would be better for you. What type of job would allow you to feel good at the end of the day? The right job is out there, but it’s up to you to go find it.
The restlessness inside of your brain does not have to live on forever. You deserve to feel happiness during your workday and inner peace when you clock out for the day. A new job may be what you need in order to make your dreams (literally) a reality, in more ways than one.
